Dazaifu Sightseeing Attractions

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
The shrine is dedicated to Sugawara Michizane who is known as the God of literature or calligraphy. About 600 plum trees are planted on the site and they start to decorate the shrine beautifully around early February to mid March.
Kanzeonji Temple
Established in 746, the Temple owns Japan’s oldest temple bell (national treasure) and many other important cultural assets, including Buddhist images.
Komyozenji Temple
This Zen temple, founded in 1273, has the only dry-style rock garden (Karesansui) in the Kyushu Region. Here you can spend a relaxing time while viewing seasonal beautiful sights, including early summer greenery and autumn leaves.

Fukuoka/Hakata Sightseeing Attractions

Fukuoka Tower

This 234-meter-high tower, covered with 8,000 mirrors, is the tallest seaside tower in Japan. The 360-degree panoramic view of the city and Hakata Bay from the observation room at a height of 123 meter is breathtaking.

Hours: 9:30am - 10:00pm (Apr.-Sept.), 9:30am - 9:00pm (Oct.-Mar.)
Closed: Monday and Tuesday in the last week of June

Kushida Shrine
Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, widely known as a summer feature of Hakata, is dedicated to this shrine. In the shrine yard grows a great symbolic gingko tree with two monumental tablets of the Mongolian invasion on its foot. A decorated float on permanent display is also impressive.
Hakata Machiya Folk Museum

This museum introduces the daily life and culture of Fukuoka city during the Meiji and Taisho periods (1868-1926). Traditional crafts and souvenirs, such as Hakata Ori (folk woven textile), Hakata Dolls and Hakata Magemono (wooden wares) are on sale.

Ohori Park & Japanese Garden

Ohori Park is a beautiful city park in central Fukuoka with a large pond at its center. There is a walking path around the circumference of the pond that is just a little over two kilometers long. Ohori Park Japanese Garden is located in the park.

Ohori Park Japanese Garden:
Hours: 9:00am-5:00pm, 9:00am-6:00pm (in June, July and August)
Closed: Mondays (following day if Monday is a national holiday), Dec.29-Jan.3

Tochoji Temple
Tochoji Temple is the oldest temple in Japan founded by Kobo-Daishi. The temple houses the Fukuoka Daibutsu (Great Buddhist statue), one of the largest wooden figures of the seated Buddha.

Fukuoka Castle Ruins/ Maizuru Park
Maizuru park is built around Fukuoka castle ruins and located within just 15 minutes from Tenjin (the center of Fukuoka city). It is well known as a viewing spot of cherry blossom and other seasonal plants and flowers. The park is adjoined by Ohori Park and Fukuoka Art Museum.
Jotenji Temple
This is a Zen temple that is said to have been founded in 1242 by reverend priest Shoichi Kokushi. This temple is also known as the site where udon and soba noodles and manju cakes were introduced, and has a monument within the precinct indicating such origins of udon and soba noodles.

Canal City Hakata
Canal City Hakata is a commercial complex with hotels, theater and cinemas, shops and restaurants. Ramen stadium, ramen noodle theme park, is located on the 5th floor of the Cinema Building and attracts visitors from home and abroad.
Shikanoshima Island
This island is popular not only as a destination for marine sports but also as the place where the Golden Seal was discovered. The Siomi Observation platform offers a commanding view of the Genkai Sea during the day, and of the Fukuoka cityscape at night. Also you can visit Shikaumi Shrine and a monument of the Manyo-shu (anthology of Japanese poetry).

Rakusui-en Garden

On the north side of Sumiyoshi Shrine of Hakata, you’ll find this beautiful Japanese garden, with a reconstructed tea house which was originally built in Meiji period.

Hours: 9:00am - 5:00pm Closed: Tuesdays; December 29 to January 1

Shofukuji Temple
Shofukuji Temple is the first Zen temple in Japan, built by Zen master Yosai who returned from the Southern Song Dynasty China in 1195. Yosai brought back tea leaves with him, giving rise to the tea culture of Hakata, which later spread to the rest of the country. The Hakata-bei, or wall, constructed during the 16th century still stands there.
