The origin of Sakurai Shrine dates back to a powerful thunderstorm in 1610, when the sacred cave of the rock door opened in a sudden flash of lightning, revealing the divine spirit. Upon hearing about this event, Tadayuki Kuroda, the second lord of Fukuoka Province, commisioned the construction of the present-day shrine building.
