Urakami Cathedral, originally constructed in 1895, was one of the largest churches in East Asia at the time. The cathedral was destroyed by the atomic bomb on August 9, 1945, but was rebuilt and completed in 1959. The rebuilt structure was made of concrete, and in 1980, it was renovated with brick tiles to restore its appearance to resemble its pre-bombing state.
