Amanoiwato Shrine enshrines a cave called Amanoiwato, where the sun goddess Amaterasu is believed to have hidden. According to Japanese mythology, this hiding caused the world to be plunged into darkness until she was lured out, restoring light to the world.

The shrine is surrounded by beautiful natural scenery and is a place of great cultural and spiritual importance. About a 10-minute walk from the shrine, there is another cave called Amanoyasukawara.
